The Met Gets an Elegantly Simple New Web Site
Museum Web sites are the new museum buildings — they’re virtual spaces that represent museums’ brands online. MoMA and theWhitney have both renovated their Web sites recently, rolling out a flashy new animated interface for the former and a lo-fi, Internet-hipster platform for the latter. Now it’s the Metropolitan’s turn: the patrician museum has launched a classy, usable site with all the heft of their historic Fifth Avenue building. Can you call a Web site neoclassical? The Met’s new landing page has a large central splash image that provides a cinematic space for the eye to wander; it currently highlights the museum’s exhibition offerings alternated with shots of the museum facade in a rotating set of photographs. Below the splash image are three columns of information arranged symmetrically, with three image links at the far bottom of the page. The header is the standard Met logo on top of section headings. The site’s background is a gradient from dark to light gray, top to bottom.
